Carbimazole is primarily used for the treatment of hyperthyroidism, which includes conditions such as Graves’ disease and toxic multinodular goiter. It works by inhibiting the production of thyroid hormones in the thyroid gland.

Carbimazole is a prodrug, meaning it is converted into its active form, methimazole, in the body. Methimazole interferes with the synthesis of thyroid hormones by inhibiting an enzyme called thyroperoxidase.
